eather is the strongest most versatile natural resource.
The comfort provided by most leather goods is due in part to leather's ability to combine breathing and insulating properties.

You may have heard that leather is hot in summer and cold
in winter. In reality, leather adjusts constantly to its environment. Because it is a natural product, leather breathes freely, maintaining a comfort level in all seasons.

The stylish and practical qualities of leather make it a pleasure to look at, to get comfy on, and to take care of. Kootenai Moon offers over 30 leather colors and texture choices, to suit your taste.

Visit us at Kootenai Moon and have a sit on a leather sofa and see for yourself.

The History of Leather

Leather has played an important role down through history, for practical purposes to elegant furnishings. Historians believe that leather’s popularity dates back to primitive days, and by the 18th century the art of preserving hides and tanning them into leather had become an old and respected trade.

Today, leather is a renewable resource, so it allows us to create valuable products out of what otherwise would
be waste. Leather is a natural by-product of the beef industry. The largest sources of cattle hides are the beef herds of North and South America.

It is important to remember that because animals are not bred specifically for the upholstery industry, you can expect variations or imperfections in the leather used for furniture. This is what makes each piece of leather furniture unique and interesting.

Basic types of Upholstered Leathers

The type of leather used on an upholstered piece greatly affects its cost, wearability, and beauty.

The most confusing term used in the furniture industry is the term top grain. It can be a contradiction because it often implies what it is not.

Top grain  To obtain a uniform thickness for upholstery, hides are fed through a splitting machine with the grain side up, yielding a grain portion called top grain. If the top surface of this leather has to be altered, due to natural markings - "nature's signature", to enable it to be used, then a layer is shaved or sanded off to remove the damage. The surface is then embossed or stamped with a uniform grain. This is then called top grain leather.

Full grain

(or full top grain) is the term for the leather surface without an attempt to conceal the natural markings - "nature's signatures". Full grain leather is the most genuine type of leather. Full grain leather can be either pure aniline or semi-aniline.

Finished Leathers
have
a protective coating applied to it to help resist stains and wear.

Semi Aniline
– more durable leather than aniline (refer to Un-finished leathers). The increased durability is provided by the application of a light surface coating which contains a small amount of pigment. This ensures consistent color and imparts some stain resistance. Semi-Aniline leathers
are the most common leathers, and for most consumers the most practical.

Bi-cast
- is a split leather (a single layer of a hide separated over its whole area) with a layer of polyurethane applied to the surface and then embossed. Bi-cast leather is a very strong and durable product; slightly stiffer and less expensive than other types of leather, but has a consistent texture and is easier to clean and maintain.

Un-finished Leathers
have no finish coatings applied, and so are more vulnerable to staining. These leather types are less suitable for families or pets.

Aniline
- the most natural looking leather. Aniline leather is saturated all through with a transparent dye. It is free of surface coating with polymer
or pigment. Lovers of truly natural products are particularly fond of these leathers. Through the years this type of leather develops a patina which adds to its value as a focal point in any room.

Pull Up
- leathers that have a deep richness to them from fat liquors applied during the tanning process. These leathers have a unique characteristic - a pull-up effect; when the leather is stretched it will tend to lighten up in that area which adds extra dimension and character to the piece. These leathers tend to scratch easily but have an "old world" effect or "aged" look.

Oily/Waxy Pull Up
- leather with a natural appearance which lightens in color when stretched to produce a unique worn-in effect with time. Over time this leather will gently distress in areas of high use (seat and arms) giving the appearance of a cherished family heirloom.

What is best for You?

If you want to go for a natural furniture upholstery and have kids and/or pets, leather is still a worthwhile purchase, you just need to choose the type of leather suitable for your family; you are best to choose a
finished leather. With children or pets expect to see more scratches and scuffs than average.

The staff at Kootenai Moon can help You find the perfect furniture piece in leather, (or fabric)...to
suit your needs, and to compliment your style!
